You’ve booked your headshot session. Yay! You’re one step closer to showing up online as your confident, magnetic self. But now comes the big question…

What the heck do you wear?

Don’t worry. I’ve got you. Here’s a quick guide to what works, what doesn’t, and how to feel amazing in front of the camera.

First Rule: You’ve Got to Feel Like You

The most important thing? Wear something that feels like you on a really good day. Not a costume. Not your “I guess this is what a professional looks like” outfit. You want to feel confident, comfortable, and totally yourself.

When you feel good in your clothes, it shows up in the photos. And that’s the whole point, right?

What To Wear for Headshots

Solid colours
Bold, rich colours look amazing on camera. Jewel tones like emerald, navy, burgundy, and deep purples are always a win. Earth tones work beautifully too, especially if they match your vibe or brand.

Classic cuts
Keep it timeless. V-necks, scoop necks, button-downs, blazers, or a favorite knit sweater. Think clean lines, fitted (but not tight), and pieces that photograph well from the waist up.

Simple layers or textures
Blazers, cardigans, and even a textured blouse can add dimension without overwhelming the shot. Just avoid anything bulky.

Necklines that flatter
V-necks and scoop necks tend to elongate the neck and open up the face. If you love a turtleneck, go for it—but make sure it’s fitted and in a great colour.

Minimal accessories
A small pop of jewelry is fine, but let your face be the star of the show. If you’re unsure, bring a few options and we can decide together.

Something that tells your story
Do you have a signature color, or something that ties into your brand? Bring it! If you’re a creative, a wellness pro, or someone in a field where personality matters, a pop of personality is always welcome.

What Not to Wear

Busy patterns or logos
Stripes, polka dots, and bold prints can be distracting. And logos (unless it’s your own) can date your photos or pull focus away from your face.

Neon colours or bright whites
Neons tend to reflect onto the skin and throw off your natural tones. Bright white can work, but only when layered with a jacket or under softer lighting.

Wrinkly or ill-fitting clothes
Cameras are like toddlers—they notice everything. Steam your clothes beforehand and make sure they fit well across the shoulders and chest.

Trendy pieces that won’t age well
You want your headshots to last a while, so skip anything super trendy unless it’s 100% aligned with your brand.

Bonus Tip: Bring Options

Not sure what to wear? Bring a couple of different tops. We can try a few combos and see what feels best on camera. My studio is your safe space to play, explore, and find what truly lights you up.
