This time around Joe gave me permission to write anything I wanted.

Last year I photographed him for his new gig: Dean of Business at Okanagan College. This is a BIG position. The Business program at Okanagan College is world-renowned, and I was cautious not to jeopardize this incredible opportunity by posting the wrong thing in public. Looking back, and knowing Joe one photoshoot more, I laugh hysterically at that thought. You see, Joe Baker doesn’t f***ing care. But don’t mistake that for apathy. It’s anything but the sort. There’s a certain quality that I have begun to recognize and LOVE in certain clients, and Joe displays it more than anyone I’ve ever had in my studio.

The profile begins with resilience in the face of major adversity. Like surviving the childhood cancer treatment that took most of the vision in his right eye. The brain tumor radiation that would give him a new identity he didn’t ask for. The stamp of being someone who not only experiences the world in a unique way but one who wears the evidence.

When someone faces adversity of this magnitude, there is a simple “sink or swim” choice they will have made. And Joe didn’t just decide to swim…he decided to open-water race his way through the Strait of Gibraltar. I call it the F- It moment.

I too am well acquainted with this moment. It’s the specific point in time when you decide…no….you KNOW…you are enough. That the world doesn’t happen to you but happens FOR you, and it’s your gift to live life beyond the adversity. If you really listen to this moment, you jump on the train of living and never look back.

Live he has. Joe has traveled and worked around the world building knowledge and expertise in hospitality, tourism, and the culinary arts. His contributions to the world are huge. Honestly, I suspect it isn’t the big things he will be known for when he’s gone. Dean Schmean.

Joe describes himself as “a multi-passionate entrepreneur” and a “vocal advocate for an inclusive, future-forward industry.”

I describe him as a multi-passionate soul who, if given the chance to share space with, will not only show you how amazing HE is but also show you how amazing YOU are.

If given the opportunity to experience Joe Baker, jump on that train and never look back. It might just be your very own F- It moment.

Big Love,
Nicole
